NASA Wants Airliners Wrapped in Self-Healing, Lightning-Proof, Interference-Repelling 'Magic Skin'. This week NASA awarded four research groups 16. million dollars to continue their development of quieter, more fuel efficient, and ultimately safer and better airliner technology. The magic skin would protect the exterior of an aircraft from lightning, impact damage, extreme temperatures, and even electromagnetic interference. The skin is supposed to make damage more noticeable so they can fix it. The self healer hasn't been explain well yet but its basically supposed to heal itself if it get torn or damaged. This skin will also cut down cabin noise created by the engines. Don't expect to see this skin any time soon because its not supposed to launch for another 20-25 years.
